Kahruvel Steamworks, the first public utility of New Babbage, has been providing steam to all buildings in the city proper since it commenced operations in 1840. In addition to steam production, the proprietor, Mr Salazar Jack, has also used the steamworks as a venue for research and development of various inventions, such as the revolutionary fanmetal. Many of the later additions and repairs to the building have been made using this material.

On the 15th of January, 1881, the steamworks was struck by a cannonball and suffered damaged to its roof, second and first floors in the northeast portion of the building. The origin of the projectile was never discovered. Repairs were finished later that fall and included additional protection against the elements.
