- Introduction
Glaubrius Simpson Valeska was born to recent immigrants August and Margarethe Valeska, arrived a month previous from Silesia, in Indianola, Texas. He experienced the city solely as an infant until his family moved to Philadelphia, whence he grew up and attained his education, stopping just short of taking his Doctorate in mathematics from the University of Virginia due to the outbreak of the American Civil War.
He took a commission as Captain of Engineers in the Army of the Potomac and was, for a scant year, seconded to the Pinkertons as a scout in Virginia and the Carolinas. Wounded at the Battle of Sayler's Creek he lay out the brief remainder of the war in Hospital.
He did not return to Academia, instead accepting the employ of the Sothron Tesla Society, on whose behalf he traveled initially to New Caledon, thence to New Babbage, as a Station Agent for the Society.
